When to go for a walk with the baby

One of the common questions moms face is when is the right time to take their newborn baby for a short walk. The answer is – when you feel ready.

Maybe your pediatrician will tell you to wait two weeks, and your mother and grandmother will advise you to follow tradition and not go out for 40 days of the baby’s life, but in the end, it’s all up to you and it depends on how you and your newborn feel. Don’t worry, the baby will be fine as long as you take proper care of them.

Duration of the First Walk

You can take your baby for a short walk in a stroller or visit friends and family nearby with them. However, it is advisable, especially during the first outings, to go to quiet places where there aren’t many people.

If you decide to travel, it is best for the trips to be short initially and not to last longer than 45 minutes. This will give both the baby and you the opportunity to adapt to the new experience.

Pay Attention to the Weather

When you go out with your baby, make sure to dress them appropriately for the weather conditions. Most parents tend to overdress their babies. However, your newborn usually needs just one layer more than you to feel comfortable. If they become too hot or too cold, the baby will likely show you by becoming fussy and starting to cry.

Don’t forget to add or remove layers from your baby when necessary. If it’s winter, dress them in a snowsuit and cover them with a blanket while they’re in the stroller. But if you enter a warm room or store, don’t forget to uncover them for a while, just as you would take off your own coat.

If You Are Warm or Cold, So Is Your Baby

If it’s sunny, it’s important for the baby to be in the shade because their delicate skin can easily burn. Do not put a blanket over the stroller, as this will trap heat and can dangerously overheat your baby. A sunshade is a much better and safer option.

If you are too cold, your baby will be too. Keep in mind that newborns are at higher risk for hypothermia because their nervous system is still undeveloped, they have a small amount of body fat, and they cannot shiver to warm up. Therefore, avoid staying outside for too long in sub-zero temperatures. A few minutes in the fresh air will be beneficial for the baby.
