How to encourage your baby's development

In early childhood, learning and play are inseparable. However, expensive educational toys or intensive efforts are not necessary to attract your baby’s attention. Here’s what you need to do to encourage your baby’s proper development.

  • Talk to your baby

Ask questions and respond to your baby’s cooing and babbling. Describe what you see, hear, and smell around the house, outside, and during walks. Use simple words like ‘baby,’ ‘cat,’ ‘go,’ ‘walk,’ ‘hot,’ and ‘cold.’ Remember that your tone of voice and facial expressions can convey ideas and emotions.

  • Change positions

Lay the baby on their tummy for a few minutes under supervision. Hold a colorful toy or make noise to encourage the baby to lift their head or practice rolling over. Hold the baby’s hands while they lie down and say, ‘Are you ready to get up? Let’s go!’ Count to three while gently pulling the baby into a standing position. When your baby is ready, try to sit them up. Hold the baby or use pillows for support.

  • Offer simple toys

Babies of this age often enjoy colorful toys, especially those that make sounds. Try a musical toy, a rattle with a handle, a soft ball, or a wooden spoon. To help your baby focus, provide only one or two toys at a time. Keep one toy out of reach to encourage the baby to stretch and crawl. Shake the rattle behind the baby’s head and let them turn and grab it. Let your baby watch their movements in a mirror.

How to encourage your babys development
  • Read to your baby

Reading to your baby encourages speech and thought development. Your baby will absorb your words and may even imitate the sounds you make. Start with books that have large, brightly colored pictures. Describe what is happening on each page. Point out and name common objects.

  • Play favorite games

Cover your face with your hands, then remove your hands and say: ‘Where are you? I see you!’ Then ask the baby: ‘Where are your little toes?’ Then touch your child’s toes and say: ‘Here are your toes!’ Hide one of the baby’s toys under the corners of a blanket and encourage them to find it.

  • Take time for cuddling

Touch, gentle caresses, and light kisses will help your baby feel safe, secure, and loved. When you hold or rock your baby, speak softly or sing soothing songs. Cuddle time is an essential part of the day and night, so make sure not to skip it.

  • Include music and songs

Music can help calm, entertain, and educate your baby. Sing or play lullabies, cheerful children’s songs, or your favorite songs.

  • Let your baby set the pace

When your baby turns away, closes their eyes, or becomes fussy, take a break. Even babies need space. Get to know your baby’s unique personality, temperament, likes, and dislikes. Responding to your baby’s needs will help you continue building their trust in you.
